Downtown Dexter real estate is located in the Village of Dexter in Washtenaw County, Michigan. For political and boundary purposes, residents of the village reside in either Scio Township or Webster Township, though most residential properties in Dexter are located in Northwest Scio Township. The village was established in 1824 and has since grown in large strides with new bridges, parks and other projects in the works from 2000 through the present day. The Village of Dexter and Downtown Dexter have no political or other affiliation with the nearby Township of Dexter, which is also located in Washtenaw County. Currently, the Village of Dexter boasts a small population of just over 4,000 residents.

Shopping and Dining

Most Downtown Dexter real estate is close to both small local boutiques and national chain stores that allow residents a wide variety of shopping opportunities. Locally, residents can visit chain stores like GNC, Play it Again Sports and Running Fit. For those with a penchant for big shopping venues, the Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor is only nine miles away and offers shopping options like Apple, Coach, Anne Taylor Loft, Abercrombie and Fitch and more stores that fit the tastes of everyone from infants to the elderly.

Eating in Downtown Dexter is always an adventure for those who want to experience friendly local eateries. Dine-in options include multiple pizza parlors, a wings joint, a BBQ grill and the Dexter Bakery, well known to locals for its baked goods and sweet treats. Fast food chains are also abundant in Downtown Dexter and residents have access to national favorites like Arby’s, Dairy Queen, McDonald’s, Popeye’s Chicken and A&W. For a full-service chain restaurant, residents typically leave Dexter and venture out to one of the more than 250 full-service restaurants in Washtenaw County. Many of these chains, along with a slew of locally owned eateries, are less than 10 miles away in Ann Arbor.

Parks and Recreation

There are many outdoor recreational opportunities for residents. The Dexter Area Historical Society operates the local historical museum out of the old St. Andrew’s United Church of Christ, which was built in 1883. The museum houses furniture and other artifacts from multiple different time periods and military artifacts from the Civil War, World War I and World War II. The museum also houses a genealogical department with access to family histories and cemetery burial records.

Living

Recently, most Downtown Dexter real estate, including homes and condos, has had an average value of around $227,000. This small town is big on family and more than 50 percent of residents are married, many with children.

The village is approximately 50 miles from the major metro of Detroit and its many museums, sports arenas and other recreational activities, and shopping and dining options. This makes Detroit the perfect day trip or weekend getaway for many residents. The village is also less than 60 miles from the Canadian border. For closer arts, culture and shopping, residents head to one of America’s great college towns, Ann Arbor, less than 10 miles away.

Schools, Health and Transportation

Due to the location and small size of Downtown Dexter real estate, there are few schools serving the area. The Dexter Community School District services all children from Kindergarten through grade 12 and includes three elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. Despite the small number of schools, student performance is high and more than 92 percent of eligible residents have at least a high school diploma, followed by nearly 40 percent with a bachelor’s degree or higher. Many residents earn a higher degree at nearby University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Healthcare is nearby for those in need of medical treatment, and there are four hospitals less than 10 miles from Downtown Dexter. St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor is only seven miles from the village center, followed by the VA Hospital, also in Ann Arbor and only nine miles away. The Chelsea Community Hospital in Chelsea is only seven miles away. The major healthcare network at the University of Michigan is also less than 10 miles away in Ann Arbor.

Most residents of Downtown Dexter commute to work in other nearby cities. Many residents make the commute to and from Ann Arbor each day. Fewer residents commute 50 miles to the Detroit area. There is little public transportation in the village but its small size makes the village easy to traverse on foot when needed.
