10 Most Scenic Drives - Its a Journey, Not a Destination

by Tom Stachler,ABR,CDPE - Group One Realty Team

It’s the Journey, Not the Destination That is Important

When it comes to road-tripping or even everyday living in the U.S., that couldn’t be more accurate. With scenic routes or gatherings with good friends and family across the nation. For this collection of drives however, you needn’t leave your car to see the most beautiful parts of the U.S. From coastal routes to mountain top highways, here are the most scenic drives in the U.S.

Pacific Coast Highway, California

CREDIT: DOUG MEEK/SHUTTERSTOCK

State Route 1 runs the length of California’s dramatic coastline and may be one of the most iconic road trips in the states. Ideally, it’s best to drive from north to south, ensuring unobstructed views the entire way. Starting along the border of Oregon and ending in San Diego, the highway passes over the Golden Gate bridge, hugs the craggy cliffs of Big Sur and serves up mile after mile of gorgeous Pacific coastline.

Skyline Drive, Virginia

CREDIT: VLADIMIR GRABLEV/SHUTTERSTOCK

Running the entire length of Shenandoah National ParkSkyline Drive boasts stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with hikes, waterfalls and overlooks interspersed throughout. If you’re planning a visit, spring and fall may be the best time for scenery. In addition to fewer crowds, the blooming wildflowers and colorful foliage, respectively, add many-hued layers to the park’s spectacular vistas.

Beartooth Highway, Wyoming/Montana

CREDIT: TRISTAN BRYNILDSEN/SHUTTERSTOCK

Only open for part of the year, the Beartooth Highway travels through the magnificent Beartooth Mountains of Wyoming and Montana. The road begins in Red Lodge, Montana, at an elevation of 6,400 feet, and climbs to 10,947 feet in Wyoming’s Beartooth Pass. Along the 68-mile drive to Cooke City, Montana, there’s plenty of scenic stops to take in the rugged mountaintops, powerful waterfalls and pristine lakes.

Highway 89A, Arizona

CREDIT: KONOPLYTSKA/ISTOCK

Running 84 miles from Prescott to Flagstaff, Highway 89A begins by climbing the backside of Mingus Mountain to the small, artsy town of Jerome. After surviving the hairpin turns up and down the mountain, you’ll drive through the heart of Sedona’s red rock country. The rest of the route to Flagstaff winds through Oak Creek Canyon, providing glimpses of red rock cliffs, evergreen pines and the crystal clear creek for which the canyon is named.

Overseas Highway, Florida

CREDIT: MIA2YOU/SHUTTERSTOCK

The Overseas Highway crosses 113 miles of land and sea, traveling from the southern tip of Florida, through Key Largo, and all the way to Key West. The historic highway is a series of causeways and bridges and serves as an interisland connector for the Florida Keys. The most iconic part of the route, the 7-mile bridge, is an architectural achievement and provides arresting views of turquoise waters in every direction.

Olympic Peninsula Loop, Washington

CREDIT: OKSANA.PERKINS/SHUTTERSTOCK

Encircling Olympic National Park, this loop showcases the best of the varied terrain in the Pacific Northwest. A park with three different ecosystems to speak of, visitors will be able to experience the majestic Hoh Rainforest, snap photos of the snow-capped Olympic Mountains and walk along the rugged Pacific coast. Along the way, make sure to take in the views Lake Crescent, Ruby Beach and Hurricane Ridge — none will disappoint.

Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire

CREDIT: DENISTANGNEYJR/ISTOCK

Stretching from Conway to Lincoln, the Kancamagus Highway runs 30 miles through New Hampshire’s White Mountains. The winding, alpine journey provides plenty of opportunities to stop and take snapshots of the scenic vistas and precipitous waterfalls. Plus, the roadway offers up several places to hike and camp along the way. The drive is most stunning in the fall when the trees are blazing in reds, oranges and yellows.

Richardson Highway, Alaska

CREDIT: ARLENE WALLER/SHUTTERSTOCK

The 368-mile drive from Fairbanks to Valdez is long, but the breathtaking panorama along the way is anything but boring. With views of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Worthington and Gulkana Glaciers, and Willow Lake, you’ll find yourself pulling over to take photos often. Near Valdez, the imposing walls of Keystone Canyon are Home to spectacular waterfalls that tumble down the 600-foot cliffs.

Hana Highway, Hawaii

CREDIT: IRONRODART/ISTOCK

Hawaii’s Hana Highway traverses 52 miles along the coast, providing epic views on either side of both ocean and jungle. Narrow and winding, drivers on this nail-biting stretch of roadway are known to drive slow. Along the way, you’ll see waterfalls and black sand beaches, encounter one-way bridges, and have plenty of chances to stop for a hike or grab a snack at a roadside fruit stand.

Going to the Sun Road, Montana

CREDIT: TUSHARKOLEY/SHUTTERSTOCK

Located within Glacier National Park, the Going to the Sun Road covers 50 harrowing miles from West Glacier to St. Mary, Montana.  In addition to crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, the road consistently skirts the edge of mountainside cliffs, providing views of dizzying drops that will make your stomach churn. Once the churning passes, however, you’ll begin to notice the verdant vistas and the Rocky Mountains in all their splendor. If you’re lucky, you’ll spy a mountain goat or black bear along the way.

20 Reasons I Like my RV Better than Staying in a Hotel

by Tom Stachler,ABR,CDPE - Group One Realty Team

I recently began traveling in a RV which I have found is more convenient and enjoyable that countless hotels if you truly want to travel.  I am enjoying the ability to easily slip away for a Michigan Summer getaway to sites I didn’t even know existed.  Or perhaps follow the warmer weather down south in the Fall and Winter months.

After just a brief period of usage, I have found a number of reasons why this form of travel is more relaxing, convenient and comfortable. The particular brand is a 25' Leisure Travel Van FX (photos below).  I find it easier to drive, insure and fuel than the larger class A coaches, and it can be setup or moved by pushing 3 buttons and you are done and on the road in 5 minutes.  Fuel economy is 16-18 miles per gal of diesel.  With this size, the number of places available to stay are expanded as well since many resorts/campgrounds etc and most of the National Parks have a 25' or less length restriction too.  With the solar panels, generator, holding tanks and lithium batteries, the unit can be self sufficient for a comfortable period as well to park to "boondock" on free government land.  Also, while in route to a more scenic destination I can pull off anywhere (golf courses to Wal-Mart parking lots) to grab some sleep and overnight parking before hitting the road again, refreshed in the morning.

20 REASONS WHY I LIKE MY RV OVER A LUXURY HOTEL

  1. I do not have to pack or unpack at each stop
  2. I know where to find my stuff without sifting through a suitcase or dirty hotel dresser drawer
  3. I know who slept in my bed the night before
  4. I can step out the door of my RV into the outdoors, unlike a hotel where I have to go out the hotel room door, down the hall, wait for the elevator, go down the elevator and out the door into the asphalt or concrete jungle.
  5. I do not have to spray or worry about bed bugs
  6. Or cockroaches and rodents crawling or hiding about
  7. I have my own bathroom and not a public one and can find the TP in the middle of the night without turning on a light
  8. I can take my dog with us without worry that he will be accepted
  9. I sleep better without being woke up in the later hours with a neighbor in the room next door or above who is too loud, banging the wall or stomping their feet above my ceiling.
  10. If I have not reached our destination yet, I can just boondock someplace and catch some shut eye before hitting the road again in the morning for no charge
  11. I never return from a day of exploring only to find room service hasn’t made up my room yet
  12. I do not have to go further than my stocked RV refrigerator to find fresh produce and beverages
  13. I can have more than a duvet and sheet on my bed.  Do you ever wonder how much goes on top of the bedspread before it gets washed.  (not cleaned very often)
  14. Can walk on a cleaner RV floor, its my dirt/germs inside the RV, not somebody else’s
  15. You can always open the windows in my RV to enjoy some fresh air (a views)
  16. The Pillow is just right !
  17. I do not have to worry about how much to tip the housekeeper
  18. Breakfast doesn’t cost $20 per person and I can enjoy it however I chose to dress
  19. I can have my morning cup of tea or coffee just how I like it, or change the view if I don't like it.
  20. I do not have to Rent a car

Happy Trails Everyone!

5 Cities Millennials are Flocking To

by Tom Stachler,ABR,CDPE - Group One Realty Team

5 Cities Millennials are Flocking To

There are several places in the U.S. where millennials can be found due to the high employment rates and beautiful settings. For adults who are in their 20s and 30s, there are several places where it's smart to invest. When you're looking to move, these are a few cities that millennials are flocking to throughout the country.

Salt Lake City, Utah

SLC

The high job growth in Salt Lake City makes it a desirable place for young adults to live as they look to obtain steady employment. The city is affordable to live in and has a median Home price of $233,000 with job growth of 2.4 percent. Salt Lake City also has a lower unemployment rate compared to other markets throughout the U.S. with 2.9 percent, which is below the national average by a few points.

Seattle, Wash.

Seattle

Seattle is considered to be a hot spot for millennials, which make up 24.1 percent of the population. Its busy nightlife scene and generous median incomes of $67,000 make it an ideal place to live for younger generations. It also boasts a job growth rate of 10.8 percent. The beautiful views of the water and the long list of activities and attractions in the area are additional reasons that many millennials relocate to the city.

Austin, Texas

Austin

Millennials are drawn to Austin for its real estate market, which includes homes that have a median price of $226,000. The job growth is also 4.2 percent, and it's the second top city in the country for the number of jobs that are becoming available. Some of the top companies that are run out of Austin include Dell, Apple, and Google, making it known as "Silicon Hills." The average median income is also $58,932, which allows many young adults to afford to purchase their first home.

There's also a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, making the city desirable for millennials who make green practices a priority. Austin is also known for selling more renewable energy than other nations.

Charlotte, N.C.

Charlotte

Charlotte is one of the best places to live in North Carolina with 14 percent of the population between the ages of 25 and 34. Many of the youth are post-college graduates who have relocated to the city to seek employment and purchase a home in a neighborhood that has a suburban family profile. The draw of millennials is also causing many companies to relocate their headquarters to Charlotte in hopes of hiring talented employees.

Dallas, Texas

Dallas

Dallas continues to grow each year and attract young out-of-towners due to its job growth rate of 3.9 percent and median Home Price of $175,000. The big city boasts plenty of shopping opportunities and attractions for those who want to stay busy without spending a lot to live close to the downtown area. The city hasn't attempted to control ride sharing, and many places are also easy to access by walking. There are also neighboring cities that are affordable to live in for those who don't mind commuting to work.
