Housing Report - Statistics for Ann Arbor and Rest of Washtenaw County Michigan

by Tom Stachler,ABR,CDPE - Group One Realty Team

Report for March 2022

Although inventory shortages continue to restrict sales, both new and carryover buyers (who have been looking since last year) are waiting to pounce on the brightest and best of this year’s class new listings. And they all want to lock in with their deals before interest rates rise further than they have.

Expect to see a similar pattern of sales and sharp price increases with lots of bidding wars in the first half of this year. The market will settle in the second half as this year’s best listings sell off and the remaining inventory quality fades.

Higher interest rates reduce affordability which hurts buyers and sellers equally. Any buyers and sellers who are thinking about moving in the near future, should do what they can to do so sooner rather than later.

Coronavirus COVID-19 illness Washtenaw County Update Advisory

by Tom Stachler,ABR,CDPE - Group One Realty Team

Advisory: Information Regarding Executive Order Prohibiting Large Gatherings

Local Police, Sheriff Support Executive Order Prohibiting Large Gatherings

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office and our law enforcement partners are asking residents to do their part in helping slow the spread of the Coronavirus by following the executive order recently announced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The order prohibits gatherings of 250 people or more and recommends that you cancel events with more than 100 people in a shared space. It also recommends that you cancel gatherings of more than 10 people where individuals at higher risk of severe illness are involved.

“For some, the threat of the virus may seem insignificant,” says Sheriff Jerry Clayton. “However, we’re asking for your help in slowing the spread. The sooner the virus is subdued, the sooner we can get back to our normal way of life. One way to do so is to keep your distance and follow the direction of our health experts.”

We are not looking for social isolation, but we are asking for social distancing. Those who disregard the order could be subject to a misdemeanor that includes up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $200. More importantly, violation of the order puts us all at significant risk. If needed, the Washtenaw County Health Officer can issue additional, local orders prohibiting gatherings where necessary.

“Now is the time for us to cooperate fully to protect everyone’s health,” says Jimena Loveluck, MSW, health officer with Washtenaw County Health Department. “Our individual and collective actions are incredibly important for slowing the potential spread of illness in our community. Keep washing, covering, and distancing. Together, we will get through this.”

The large gatherings ban is one of several statewide efforts to help stop the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The ban went into effect at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 13 and remains in place until Sunday, April 5 at 5 p.m.

The executive order applies to all gatherings of more than 250 people in a single shared space and includes both private businesses and public locations. A single shared space includes, but is not limited to, a room, hall, cafeteria, auditorium, theater, or gallery. People gathering for the purposes of industrial or manufacturing work; mass transit; or the purchase of groceries or consumer goods are currently exempt from the state ban.

Health experts are still learning about how this new coronavirus spreads. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person, between people who are in close contact (within about six feet) of an ill person, through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Therefore, keeping your distance is important.

Prevention
There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. Information from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is available in English, Chinese, and Spanish.

  • Clean your hands often. Scrub with soap for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer if you cannot wash.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay Home when you are sick, except to get medical care. Call ahead before going to your healthcare provider. Learn what to do if you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Immediately wash your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces.

Older adults and people who have severe underlying chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness. View additional prevention steps from CDC for people at higher risk. Consult with your health care provider for more steps you may be able to take to protect yourself.

REMEMBER: Discrimination harms public health. People of Asian descent, including Chinese Americans, are not more likely to get coronavirus than anyone else.

Please continue to rely on official sources of information for local (www.washtenaw.org/covid19), state (www.michigan.gov/coronavirus), and national (http://www.cdc.gov/COVID19) updates.

Coronavirus Prevention Information - COVID-19 Respiratory Disease Tips

by Tom Stachler,ABR,CDPE - Group One Realty Team

The following information has been provided by Michigan's State Emergency Operations Center:

As you know, a global outbreak of a respiratory disease named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) started in China in late 2019. The virus has been detected in more than 90 countries, including the U.S. There are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Michigan. However, the situation is rapidly evolving and it is likely we will see more cases across the U.S.

The state of Michigan has been working with federal and local partners to monitor the situation, develop and expand laboratory testing, educate and raise awareness, and prepare for COVID-19 in Michigan.

  • On Feb. 3, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) activated the Community Health Emergency Coordination Center (CHECC) to support state and local response.
  • On Feb. 28, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer activated the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) to coordinate state-government resources.
  • On March 3, Gov. Whitmer announced the creation of four task forces to combat the spread of coronavirus and assess the impact it may have on Michiganders’ day-to-day lives.

Today, the overall threat to the general public and in the U.S. remains low, but we are approaching this emerging threat to public health with an abundance of caution. Because you are a regular subscriber of Michigan natural and cultural resources news from the DNR, we are sharing this important update so you will have appropriate information on the steps people can take to protect themselves and their friends and families at Home, at work and in everyday gathering spots.

Use good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases

  • Stay home if you are sick and advise others to do the same.
  • Always cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or sleeve.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, if soap and warm water are not available.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces (computers, keyboards, desks, etc.).

It’s not too late to get your flu shot! While the influenza vaccine does not protect against COVID-19 infection, it can help keep you healthy during the flu season.

Review travel advisories before planning travel

Always review travel advisories from the federal government when planning personal and business travel. Review CDC.gov/Travel for destinations with risk of community spread of COVID-19.

Take action to prepare your organization

Community spread of COVID-19 in Michigan could affect routines and daily operations. Employers should consider creating or updating their infectious disease outbreak response plan, including:

  • Identify work-related exposure and health risks to employees.
  • Review human resources policies to make sure policies and practices are consistent with public health recommendations.
  • Explore policies and practices for flexible work sites or hours to increase physical distance between employees.
  • Identify essential business functions to maintain operations if interruptions to supply chains or increased absenteeism occur.

The Centers for Disease Control has provided guidance for preventing the spread of COVID-19 in communities including businesses, community- and faith-based organizations, and childcare organizations and schools.

Share accurate information

Always share accurate information about a virus and how it spreads. It is important to remember that stigma and discrimination occur when people associate an infectious disease, such as COVID-19, with a population or nationality. COVID-19 does not target people from specific populations, ethnicities or racial background. Suspected discrimination can be reported to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

This is a rapidly evolving situation. For the latest information, frequently visit Michigan.gov/Coronavirus or CDC.gov/Coronavirus.
